On March 25, 2026, the National Congress approved the bill on the use of seawater for desalination (Bill No. 11,608-09), bringing to an end a legislative process that lasted more than eight years. The initiative has been sent for promulgation and publication in the Official Gazette.
For the first time in Chile, the law establishes a comprehensive regulatory framework for seawater desalination, creating a new type of desalination concession, a National Desalination Strategy, and vesting the General Directorate of Water (DGA) with the authority to process applications and oversee the sector.
